Default Action: For changing behavior
- Use Laziness To Your Advantage - The 20 Second Rule
- Make it easier to do good things
- If you want to learn the guitar and cut down on watching tv, keep your guitar in your living room ready for you to play, remove the batteries from your TV remote, and keep the batteries in another room. When you get home from work and want to watch tv but realize you can’t rather than getting the batteries, you’ll likely play the guitar because it requires less effort to get started.
20 second rule: Make it 20 seconds easier to do the good habit and 20 seconds harder to do the bad habit.
The point is to lessen the barrier of activities you want to do more off by making it more convenient to do them. On the flip side, increase the obstacles between activities you want to stop participating in by making them more difficult to start.- Our surroundings are a huge contributing factor when it comes to our behavior.
- The most difficult part of any behavior is getting started.
- Humans are lazy and would rather do something that’s easy and convenient instead of what we actually want to do.
